The typical geek to-do list: make love, grow taller, go somewhere, download youtube videos, tie a tie, train their dragon, lose weight, get somewhere else again, lose a little more weight, then jailbreak their iphones.

Bowling For Soup

Bowling For Soup is one of my favourite rock bands of all time because they gave us the nicest, happiest(not gay, though) songs we've had - Almost, 1985, Girl All the Bad Guys Want, The Bitch Song, High School Never Ends.

The song 1985 was once the most downloaded song on the Internet, but unlike some other rock bands who are worried that they'll not earn enough to buy an Island in the Pacific Ocean, they simply don't give a sh*t, another cornerstone of the Punk Rock culture.

The first BFS song I learned on the guitar was 1985, and it sure does bring back memories.

Avril Lavigne

Although she's considered a normal pop artist to most, she is definitely big in Singapore. Every young Singaporean born in the 90s would've definitely heard her songs. Some even wanted to become the Asian version of her.

The attractive thing about her is the don't-give-a-damn-attitude, which is the basic foundation of punk rock. Even if you don't like her, you have to agree that she's already won the popularity contest.

I'm very certain that in some corner of Singapore right now, there are a young girls who aspire to be famous and tour the world like Avril Lavigne. And I'm very sure that they are pratising hard right now.

Iron Maiden

The very first Iron Maiden song I've heard was Fear Of The Dark, the live version performed in Brazil.

The song starts with some heavy distorted strumming followed by a low, clean riff. The whole crowd started to hymn together with the music. It was, to me, one of the most powerful moments in rock music. It clearly defined the heavy metal culture and the reach of its influences. I have never seen such a huge audience participation in such a large-scale performance.(Brazil has the largest football stadiums ever built)

Iron Maiden has also one of the most powerful rock vocals of all time in its frontman Bruce Dickinson.

Judas Priest

Judas Priest is one of the earliest heavy metal groups along with Black Sabbath. Though born of the heavy metal origin, their musical style evolved throughout their career towards a more mainstream pop rock style.

Nevertheless, they still rock. The first time I heard Judas Priest, I was very impressed with former vocal Al Atkin's voice. It wasn't the very annoying heavy metal coarse voice. We know that some heavy metal bands(specifically thrash, black and death metal) use those type of dark, annoying voice like the world is ending soon and they can't sing for shit.

But Judas Priest is nowhere near that. They have a voice that sounds like they know what they're doing. I've heard similar vocals in Japanese rock bands like X Japan. And I conclude that the Priests are the most influential heavy metal band of all time.
